A calabash is a large gourd that African musicians cut in half, hollow out, dry out and then strike with their hands to use as a drum. Our calabash comes from Ghana, West Africa.

The perfect drum medicine for any womb-an. Calabash grows in West Africa, South America, Mexico and India, among other places. But the biggest ones can only be found in West Africa. The gourd is dried slowly in the fresh air after it has matured which then makes it hard and gives it a wood structure. I am working with a partner from Ghana who is connected directly to the farmers in this region.

Bigger calabash means bigger sound. However, it also means a bigger baggage if you are a traveler or a multi-instrumentalist. My favorite calabash sizes are between 36 to 39cm in diameter because it’s big enough for a loud bass sound and small enough to travel with. Therefore, I only have these 4 sizes available.

As this is a natural product, the shape, color and size can vary slightly.
