Our calabash drums are crafted from large gourds, traditionally cut in half, hollowed out, and dried to create a unique and resonant instrument. Sourced from Ghana, West Africa, each drum is meticulously hand-carved by skilled artisans, ensuring a one-of-a-kind piece.

The perfect drum medicine for any woman. Calabash grows in West Africa, South America, Mexico, and India, with the largest and most resonant gourds found in West Africa. After maturing, the gourds are slowly dried in the fresh air, hardening into a wood-like structure. Our partner in Ghana works directly with local farmers and artisans, bringing you these beautifully hand-carved instruments.

A larger calabash means a deeper, more powerful sound. However, it also means a bulkier piece of equipment for travelers or multi-instrumentalists. My favorite sizes range from 36 to 39 cm in diameter—large enough to produce a rich bass sound, yet compact enough for easy transport. We offer four sizes of this design.

As each calabash is a natural product, slight variations in shape, color, size, and carvings are to be expected.
